Warwick Senators State Basketball League club will this week look to lead the way in the West Australian basketball community to acknowledge and celebrate Indigenous culture. In collaboration with Perth Redbacks Basketball, this coming Thursday night 18th April will see the inaugural Indigenous Recognition game between the clubs held at the Churches of Christ Sport and Recreation Association (CCSRA) managed Warwick Stadium, to promote inclusion and celebrate indigenous culture.
Indigenous artist Kevin Bynder was commissioned to create artwork portraying the story of the Senators local basketball development pathway. This work has then been translated into a special indigenous jersey design that both the Men and Women’s SBL sides will wear with pride as they hit the court on Thursday night. “Utilising the club colours and depicting the journey that players take through Warwick Stadium to develop from the junior ranks up through to the state level, Kevin has done a phenomenal job in telling this story” observed CCSRA Director Operations Scott Joy. “To see this artwork then translated into the fantastic design our players will be wearing, we feel privileged and proud to be an organisation that values our significant engagement with our indigenous families and the broader local community”.
This local expression of recognition is based on long-term and ongoing engagement through indigenous basketball carnivals held across more than a decade, deepening ties with Binar Junior Basketball Club and the weekly patronage of Aboriginal families as part of the local basketball community. Binar President Adam Desmond commented that “Warwick is one of only two places that we choose to play at, our young aboriginal players feel part of the community and look forward to getting out on the court each week”.
Warwick Senators are pleased to have the support of Jessica Stojkovski – Member for Kingsley, BridgePro Foundation, Boomering and Basketball WA as special event sponsors all keen to be a part of celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture at Warwick Stadium.
